    Aims:

    To improve and refresh knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Practice.

    Learning Outcomes:

    By the end of this course, the delegates will be able to:

    • Understand the importance of capacity in adult social care decision making
    • Understand what the law says about supported decision making and substitute decision making, including Lasting Powers of Attorney, advance decisions and the Court of Protection
    • Understand the application of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 principles
    • Confidently apply the Mental Capacity Act 2005 to assess whether a person lacks capacity to make a particular decision at a particular time
    • Confidently apply the Mental Capacity Act 2005 to act in the best interests of someone lacking capacity to make a decision for themselves
    • Identify when and how to work with Independent Mental Capacity Advocates
    • Record decision making appropriately and robustly
    • Avoid practice issues highlighted in Ombudsman reports, case law and Safeguarding Adults Reviews.

    Who should attend:

    Social workers in direct practice with adults or young people aged 16 and over. Supervisors and managers of social workers.
