Aims and Objectives:
To provide an overview of the complex relationship between professional ethics, the application of the law and the impact of social policy.
- Understand your responsibilities as a social worker to the service user, the family and the Court.
- Understand the need to work in a multi-agency forum.
- Understand the key principles of the Children Act 1989 and how they apply in everyday social work decision making.
- Understand the interaction of human rights.
- Be familiar with how the law, including case law, can support children and families and care planning.
- Understand the range of powers and impact for children who are after children whilst in care and when leaving care.
- Understand the court process and the need for planning for Care proceedings, the pre-proceedings stage and available permanency options

- Responsibilities as a social worker and interaction with the law
- What are your responsibilities as a social worker to the child, professionals, the family, and the multi-agency forum.
- Practicalities of seeking legal advice and developing an effective working and supportive relationship with the LA’s legal representative
- Main Principles of Children Act 1989
- Local Authority statutory powers and duties to Children S.17, S.47 Children Act
- Public Law proceedings and orders- S.31 Children Act
- Public Law Outline- overview of the process and statutory timescales
- There is a need for concurrent care planning and considering realistic plans for the child’s permanency.
- Leaving Care Services- Leaving Care Act
